Appointment of Richard Buttigieg as Chairman
As recently mentioned at the National Day rally, Denis Matthews has stood down as the Chairman of the SDGG after a long tenure which has seen him present [12] National Days to the people of Gibraltar. Denis will nevertheless remain as Vice-Chairman so the Group will continue to avail itself of his experience.
At the AGM meeting of the 23rd September it was agreed that Mr. Richard Buttigieg will be taking over as Chairman, having spent two years on the committee and the last nine months as Vice-Chairman.
Richard, a lawyer with extensive experience practising locally and internationally, has been actively involved in SDGG activities for many years. He has worked closely with Denis on a varied list of issues that the SDGG has pursued in its main objective of decolonisation and delisting at the United Nations.
In relinquishing the Chair, Mr Matthews commented as follows:
“I wish to first and foremost thank the many SDGG supporters who have over many years demonstrated their loyalty and commitment to the Group and helped with all its activities. In particular, I wish to thank the people of Gibraltar who, from the very beginning, overwhelmingly supported the National Day rally.”
Whilst, Richard Buttigieg had the following to say:
“Denis’ shoes are very big shoes to fill and I am therefore under no illusion as to the magnitude of my task. I am nevertheless confident that with his help and that of the SDGG supporters, I shall be able to progress our objectives. Gibraltar is indebted to Denis for all that he has done over two decades (often without recognition). I am grateful for all that he has taught me. If I achieve only a fraction of what he has, I shall consider I have made a positive contribution.”

Mr Picardo meets Ed Miliband MP.
13 May 2014
Mr Picardo meets Miliband
The Chief Minister has today met with the UK’s Leader of the
Opposition, Rt Hon
Ed Miliband MP.
The meeting was attended by Clare Moody, Labour candidate for
the South West
and Gibraltar in the coming European Parliamentary election to be held
on 22nd
May.
The meeting was held at Mr Miliband's office in the House of
Commons and
covered a wide range of subjects including matters related to gaming,
financial
services and defence.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Picardo said: "This is the
fourth time I
have had a chance to discuss Gibraltar-related matters with Mr
Miliband.
His position in support of the right of self-determination of
the people of
Gibraltar and of our rights in Europe is clear and resolute.
It was also clear to me that he understands the clear message
we are sending
the UK in relation to the Point of Consumption Tax and the standards
of
regulation that will be applicable to operators who wish to take bets
in the
UK.
During my time with him, I briefed Mr Miliband on the
continuing problems at
the frontier."
